Residents of Ambattur demand that additional ticket counters be opened at platform 2 of Ambattur railway station or the existing ticket vending machine from platform 1 must be relocated to platform 2. At present, the station has three platforms, of which platforms 1 and 2 are used for suburban trains and the third platform is used for goods and express trains. The main ticket counters are located on platform 1. Commuters said that the platform one is too narrow and risk of falling while entraining or detraining, especially during rush hour, is high.
Besides, due to lack of street lights on the extended portions of platforms 1 and 2 at the station, the safety of commuters, especially women, has been compromised considerably.
“The extended portion of the platforms does not have shelters and adequate lighting. At night, many commuters avoid boarding trains from the extended portion due to safety concerns,” says Srikumar, a resident of Ambattur.
“Steps will be taken to relocate the existing ticket vending machine to the other platform and to provide seating arrangement and lighting facility,” says a railway official.
