‘Reconstruct Rail Nagar causeway bridge’

Three years after the 2015 deluge which cause the collapse of the Rail Nagar causeway bridge at Padikuppam of Mogappair, residents want the State agencies including Greater Chennai Corporation and Public Works Department (PWD) to construct a high-level bridge to replace it. The bridge comes under Ward 93 of Zone-7 (Ambattur). The old bridge was damaged on November 15, 2015 due to flood. Despite requests by residents for a high-level bridge that will withstand floods, the authorities constructed a new low-level bridge after a year.

Every day, on an average, more than 5,000 vehicles including tipper lorries and school vans use the dilapidated concrete bridge that connects key areas in the region. Motorists from areas including Ayapakkam, Kolathur, Retterri and Korattur use the bridge to reach Koyambedu wholesale market and to CMBT bus terminus as it helps them avoid the congested Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) Main Road. “Despite its low-level and lack of safety features, the bridge helps residents to reach schools, hospitals and bus terminus in the locality. Even ambulances use the bridge to shift victims to the nearest government hospital,” says K. Saroja, a resident in Mogappair.

Despite its significance, the bridge lacks safety features including sidewalls and street lights. “Steps will be taken to provide safety features on the existing low-level bridge soon,” says a Corporation official.
