Government. told to apprise court of steps taken so far

The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the State Government and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department to take necessary measures for the smooth conduct of the 1001st birth anniversary celebrations of saint Ramanujar at Sriperumbudur near here, and apprise the court of the steps taken by Friday.

The First Division Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice A. Selvam passed the interim order on a public interest litigation petition filed by the International Sri Vaishnava Ramanuja Samrajya Sabha, represented by its secretary Swami Govinda Ramanuja Dasa seeking basic amenities such as drinking water and toilet facilities for devotees.

Less number of devotees

Earlier, HR & CE counsel S.P. Maharajan submitted a report on behalf of the executive officer of the Adikesava Perumal Temple in Sriperumbudur and stated that only 75,000 devotees had attended the millennial celebrations of Saint Ramanujar last year and therefore much lesser number of devotees were expected this year. He said the executive officer had already made individual representations to the police, fire and rescue services and public works, highways, health, municipal administration and revenue departments seeking their assistance in the smooth conduct of the celebrations this year.
