Railway police to form crime prevention, detection squad

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - CHENNAI:

In the wake of the recent attack on software professional Muneeswari Nagaraj, who was pushed out of a moving train by a thief here, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) will shortly form a crime prevention and detection squad for railway stations.

The RPF, in association with the Government Railway Police (GRP), have identified some stations where the movement of antisocial elements is more.

“The crime prevention and detection team will be headed by a Sub-Inspector and function round-the-clock,” a source in the RPF said.

All these years, the RPF was concentrating on safeguarding railway property and ensuring the safety of passengers. “The squad will undergo training in various aspects of crime fighting, including gathering of intelligence on the move and using arms. We are also roping in psychologists to train the squad members,” the source said.

The squad, along with the GRP would conduct combing operations in different stations on a regular basis. “As of now only the major stations are covered. Now we will focus on the smaller ones too. The inspections will be done in a random manner,” he said.
