Stretch near Pencil Factory bridge also needs more vigilance

Rash driving is one reason behind accidents in an area. Motorists commuting through Dr. Vijayaraghavalu Road in Old Washermenpet want a few steps to be initiated to prevent rash driving.

First, they have requested the Chennai Traffic Police to place barricades starting near Pencil Factory Bridge till Thiruvottiyur High Road.

The absence of barricades on the stretch force motorists to drive on the wrong lane and at a speed.

“Barricades will also prevent undisciplined motorists from driving on the wrong direction,” said B. Jaison, a motorist.

Residents also want traffic police to carry out more surprise checks on this section of the road. Poor lighting is another reason for accidents. “Lack of functional lights on the stretch is a real problem,” said P. Priya, a motorist and a resident of Royapuram.

Other problems

Encroachments and haphazard parking hamper free flow of vehicles.

During monsoon, the stretch gets worst. Many pedestrians walk on the carriageway.

This is an important stretch as it provides connectivity to Royapuram, Tollgate, Tondiarpet and Thiruvottiyur.

An official of the Zone 5 of the Greater Chennai Corporation said he will take up the issue with the assistant engineer concerned.

“We will take steps repair or replace the non-functional lights.”
