The assessment, calculation, collection and status of professional tax accounts will be made online by the Chennai Corporation next month.

The final stages of testing the online service is under way and over 89,000 professional tax accounts in the city, including 59,000 individual accounts, will have yet another option for remitting the tax using this new facility.

The professional tax assessment number will have 18 alphanumeric characters of which the first two characters will denote the zone, three characters for ward number, four for the register number, two for category and three for the department.

Categories of individual account, private establishment, Union and State governments have been created for the tax calculation.

According to sources in the civic body, other features of the facility would be similar to the one for paying property tax online. Last year, over Rs.5.5 crore of property tax was paid online.

The services to be provided online include self-assessment of professional tax for all accounts, including new ones, an official said. The existing tax assessment option would also be available after the introduction of the online scheme.

The arrears in professional tax could also be viewed online. The facility is expected to be launched on the civic body website, >www.chennaicorporation.gov.in .

The final assessment of tax should be approved by the officials, which would also be done online, an official said.
