Traffic on the busy Choolaimedu High Road was disrupted on Saturday as a portion of the road caved in after a drinking water main pipeline beneath broke.
The stretch is expected to remain closed on Sunday.
Restoration work
According to Chennai Corporation officials, the road caved in at 11.30 a.m. and restoration work was not possible without completing the repair work in Metrowater pipeline.
The collapsed portion of the road is five metre wide and one metre deep.
As no space was left on the road for vehicles to pass, police had to close traffic on the stretch and erect signboards for diverting vehicles.
The road is 700 metre long and is categorised as an interior road by the civic body. Corporation officials said the road work would begin on Sunday if Metrowater officials complete the repair work of the water main pipeline. Residents of the locality have requested officials to complete the work by Sunday, said zonal committee chairman of Chennai Corporation's Teynampet zone S.Shakthi.
