Misplaced lampposts, a nightmare for motorists

Poor illumination and encroachment of pedestrian space pose a threat to the safety of road users on Ennore Expressway

Motorists driving through Ennore Expressway possess a special skill: driving in darkness. It’s not a skill they wanted but had to learn to make it safe through the route.

The stretch does have some lampposts, only they are positioned or rather misplaced near commercial establishments. For long, the motorists have been urging the officials of Zone 1 of Greater Chennai Corporation to relocate the lampposts to the western lane towards Annai Sivagami Nagar and Kathivakkam High Road. Right now, they are positioned near the establishments or in interior lanes at Bharathiyar Nagar, Nethaji Nagar East and Periya Kasi Kovil Kuppam.

The difficulty is after the sun goes down. The stretch witnesses a steady flow of traffic and several heavy vehicles come in and go out of an automobile company on Kathivakkam High Road. The lamps do shine bright, but hardly gives the motorists any light to pass through safely. The illumination from the commercial establishments serve as their guiding light but once they shut shop, the motorists are left to grapple in the dark.

Walkers on this stretch don’t have it easy either, for the pavements are damaged and filled with trash. Besides, visitors to the Ennore coast find it convenient to park their vehicles on the pavements, forcing the pedestrians to walk on the road, at the risk of being knocked down by the speeding vehicles.

When contacted, a Corporation official said that the stretch will be inspected and corrective measures taken at the earliest.
