The Triplicane police has zeroed in on a woman assailant who killed a Muslim ‘spiritual healer’ and astrologer on Monday evening, after throwing an inflammable substance at him.

The victim, Syed Bazurudhin, 62, had an outlet on Triplicane High Road, just in front of the Big Mosque.

He was performing special prayers when the assailant, who was in a burkha, threw a bottle of an inflammable material at him.

A special team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Arokia Prakasam, analysed the CCTV footage to identify the accused. The team interrogated nine of 10 women and searched for the 10th on the assumption that she could be the killer.

Upon reaching her house in Ice House, they found that it was locked.

Later, the police managed to trace her. She is of unsound mind. By the evening, she suddenly admitted herself into the Institute of Mental Health and has been undergoing treatment since late Wednesday.

Police said Palanivel, who came to rescue his friend after the attack was also injured and he identified the woman as the person who threw the inflammable material.

The police are investigating if the suspect is faking mental illness.
