A temporary shelter under construction for policemen on duty on the road overbridge at Tambaram was brought down on Saturday following objections raised by the Highways Department.

The ROB is at the intersection of NH 45 and two State Highways - Velachery Main Road and Mudichur Road.

From the police perspective, it also served as an entry and exit point for those indulging in crimes in the southern suburbs as well as vehicles involved in such offences.

Hence, personnel from Tambaram (Law and Order) police station are posted there from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Barricades were placed to prevent over speeding and rash driving as part of steps to prevent accidents and also to ease traffic flow. The policemen also made random checks of vehicles .

As the policemen had to stand for long hours under the scorching heat, it was decided to construct a temporary shelter to provide them some relief. Construction material, including cement bags and bricks, were brought to the rotary on the bridge.

It was proposed to construct the shelter on the median of the ramp towards Velachery Main Road.

However, officials of the Highways Department objected to it and asked the policemen not to go ahead with the structure as it was not permitted.

After completion, the bridge was handed over to the Chennai City Roads by the Projects division. Officials said construction of any structure on the bridge was not permitted and that no shelter could be seen in any bridge. Such a structure on the median would hamper visibility for motorists , especially in the evening hours, the officials said.

Tambaram police pulled down the structure following the objections raised by the Highways.
