Police say man beaten up in rehab centre did not kill self

On Wednesday, a video clip of a patient getting brutally beaten up, allegedly at a rehabilitation home near Porur, went viral along with reports that he had committed suicide.

However, police officers clarified that the patient in the video was different from the person who had committed suicide. The latter was also a patient at the same institution – God Helping Foundation.

“The man in the video is a 50-year-old, while Kuppusamy, who committed suicide on Wednesday, was just 29,” said an officer from the Nolambur police station.

Officers claimed that Kuppusamy, a resident of Madha Koil street, Nolambur, ended his life due to a domestic problem, and his family members had denied that he had been beaten up at the home. “His mother, wife and other relatives said he was not ill-treated or beaten up at the centre,” said the officer.

“They said he had committed suicide due to depression over the fact that his wife Ammu had left him, and over having to work outside the city. We believe that the two incidents are unconnected,” added the police officer.
