Plea to lay speed-breakers on Chitlapakkam Main Road

Pedestrians are at the mercy of speeding motorists at the stretch

Residents of Chitlapakkam and Tambaram Sanatorium have asked the Chitlapakkam Selection Grade Town Panchayat officials to ensure speed-breakers are laid on Chitlapakakkam Second Main Road. The Road provides easy access to Tambaram Sanatorium, East Tambaram, Chitlapakkam, Chromepet and Hasthinapuram and witnesses constant flow of traffic.

From the flyover to the intersection of Periyar Street, Tambaram Sanatorium, the walkers’ path on both sides of the road has been usurped by commercial establishments and is used as a parking lot.

Towards Chitlapakkam, the walkers’ path abutting the carriageway is out of bounds for pedestrians as garbage is dumped on the stretch, making it unhygienic. During rains, rainwater stagnates on the stretch, forcing pedestrians to walk on the carriageway. On the opposite side, garbage is dumped on the pavements and is strewn around a healthcare centre.

“As there are no speed-breakers, motorists negotiate the stretch at a break-neck speed,” says V. Jayaraman, a resident.
