Plea for dedicated lane

Ambulances, college buses often get stuck in queues

A proposal to allocate a dedicated lane for ambulances and other specified vehicles passing through tollgates in Kancheepuram district was mooted at the District Road Safety Meeting in Pallavaram on Thursday.

Participating in the meeting, stakeholders, including those operating educational institution buses, ambulance service providers and those ferrying industrial workers, pointed out that on several occasions, particularly during morning and evening rush hours, ambulances got stuck in queues at the tollgates.

The college and the industrial vehicles were also not able to make it on time to reach their respective destinations.

Thus, it was suggested that lane discipline be strictly imposed at the tollgates, at least during peak hours or at the time of traffic congestion.

While responding to their plea, District Collector P. Ponnaiah said that the district administration was aware of the problems faced by this section of road users at the tollgates and it had been proposed to create an exclusive lane for ambulances, school and college buses and those vehicles carrying industrial workers at the tollgates.

Passes to be given

It has also been proposed to instruct the tollgate managements to issue passes to these category of vehicles so that they could pass through the tollgate at the shortest possible time, he added.

The District Road Safety Committee chairman and Sriperumbudur MP K.N. Ramachandaran and Sriperumbudur MLA K. Palani were among those who participated in the meeting.
