A. Rajkumar, the driver of the EMU which collided with a passenger train near Arakkonam, has undergone facial correction surgery, which was performed by plastic surgeons and dental surgeons, according to V. Palani, Medical Superintendent, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).

“On Wednesday, he underwent a plastic surgery on the lips and near the eye. Due to the surgery his lips are sutured and he is unable to talk.” Mr. Rajkumar is recovering in ward 48 in the speciality block of the hospital and is on a liquid diet, and will most probably not require further surgery, said Dr. Palani. Mr. Rajkumar's wife, R. Ambika, said she did not know how the accident took place. “He has not said much since I came to see him on Wednesday morning.”

Despite visits by the Union Railway Minister and Minister of State for Railways, Mr. Rajkumar was in no position to talk, said M.K. Arumugam, his father. His brother A. Palani, also a railway motorman, said: “I am feeling very nervous. I don't know what happened. Only after he recovers we will know.”
