The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras saw a 30% increase in the number of job offers as compared to last year, on the third day of phase 1 placements. As many as 133 companies have made 680 job offers to students.
While 20 start-ups made 78 offers, 136 pre-placement offers were made this year, taking the total number of job offers to 816 so far. During the 2017-18 academic year, 106 companies had made 526 offers (643 including PPOs) at the end of day 3.
According to the institute’s placement office, more than 90 of the 680 offers were for data science/data analytics, indicating a strong growth in the sector.
As many as 17 companies have offered more than 10 jobs each. Micron technology, Intel technology India, Microsoft, Citibank and Qualcomm have made over 20 offers each.
During the first three days of phase 1, more top recruiters have visited the campus. There has been nearly a 25% increase in the number of companies as compared to the preceding year. So far, 13 international job offers from the U.S.A., Singapore and Dubai have been received.
Manu Santhanam, advisor, placements, said: “We have had a great start to this year’s placements. We hope the strong trend continues over the next four days as well.” The first phase of placements will end on Saturday.
Unlike last year, big recruiters were scheduled on day four instead of day one, institute sources said. There has been an increase in the number of postgraduate students being placed this year. In 2017-18, 307 students (including Ph.Ds and Masters) received offers at the end of the third day. This year, it rose to 374 postgraduate students. “This indicates a reaffiarmation of the standing of IIT Madras with respect to specialised degree programmes,” Mr. Santhanam said.
