Spark, a civic forum based in Besant Nagar, has made a representation to the Greater Chennai Corproation to construct footpath with bollards on Durgabai Deshmukh Road in Adyar. T.D. Babu, founder of the forum says “A commercial establishment had constructed a ramp on the footpath and it was misused as parking lot. The ramp was demolished after environmental activists took up the issue with the GCC.”
At present, at the demolished area, two-wheelers are parked up to the carriageway.
The carriageway is used as a valet parking lot. As a result, during the evening rush hour, traffic moves at a snail's pace.
S. Subramanian, a senior-citizen, and a resident of Kottivakkam, says, “The free flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic comes to a grinding halt during the evening rush hour.”
A resident, on conditions of anonymity, says, “ Recently, it nearly took me half-an hour to reach the intersection of Besant Avenue Road and Durgabai Deshmukh Road, Adyar, from Adyar Bridge.”
The stretch does not have a proper footpath. The commercial establishments have usurped the walkers’ pathway. The area abutting the walkers footpath is used to park vehicles. The pedestrians have no other option but to walk on the carriageway,” says T. D. Babu, a social and an environmental activist, said.
