It’s commendable that the stormwater drains near the Adyar bus depot on Kalki Krishnamurthy Salai (also known as Lattice Bridge Road) have been desilted. However, the overall results of the exercise have not been impressive.
Following the work, the slabs on the stormwater drains, which also serve as the footpath, have not been placed properly.
As the slabs are protruding, pedestrians are exposed to the possibility of tripping over them. Some slabs appear to have been damaged. Noticeably worn-out, these slabs should have been replaced long ago.
There has been another problem hindering the free movement of pedestrians: The sediment removed from stormwater drains were left on the pavement. At the time of this article going to print, some sediment had been cleared.
With the pedestrian infrastructure in a shambles, many of those riding shank’s mare share the carriageway with motorists.
Here, even motorists don’t have enough space for themselves, having lost some of it to unauthorised parking of vehicles. These vehicles, mostly motorcycles, belong to customers of shops and eateries located on both sides of the road. Shareautorickshaws also line up on the side of the road where the depot is located.
This problem is at its worst in the evening hours when these eateries are extremely busy, say residents of the locality.
