The police arrested a pawn broker from Choolai on charges of encouraging thieves to commit crimes and sell the haul to him. Three youngsters, who stole jewels and mobiles phones, and sold him these objects, were also detained.

The police initially arrested the three youth — Venkatesan, Mohan and Vignesh.

During the interrogation, they admitted to stealing jewellery and mobile phones in Otteri and surrounding localities and selling them to Vinoth, a pawn broker.

“He encouraged the three to indulge in stealing and purchased the jewels at a very low price from them,” said A. Jayasubramanian, assistant commissioner, Pulianthope.

Police are investigating the nexus between pawn brokers and thieves in certain cases.
