Parking woes hit MRTS commuters in Velachery

The Velachery MRTS station receives commuters in droves every day but many of them find it difficult to park their vehicles as there is a parking yard on only one side of the facility.

Commuters from southern outskirts such as Medavakkam and Sithalakpakkam find it tough to go all the way to the parking yard located on the northern side of the railway station. With the Chief Minister announcing that the government would develop a commercial complex above the railway station, the situation is only bound to get worse.

M. Shanmugasundaram, a resident of Medavakkam, said commuters coming from the southern side have to negotiate the traffic on Velachery Main Road and the narrow Station Road to reach the parking lot. A lot of time and fuel is wasted, and commuters often miss trains, particularly during peak hours, he said.

Commuters are unhappy that the Southern Railway, despite having a huge open space on the southern side of the railway station and a proper road network, has not created a parking lot.

A senior official of Southern Railway said that the department was seriously considering opening a parking yard on the southern side of the railway station. They are in talks with the railway contractor who is managing the parking yard. The official said that if the parking contractor was not willing to take up the parking contract, tenders would be floated by next month.
