Parking space to shrink owing to construction

Construction of multi-level car parking is on

In two months, if passengers want to park their vehicles at the Chennai airport to pick up or drop someone, they may not be able to find a slot. The car parking area will shrink quite a bit during construction of the multi-level car parking and space will be available only on first come, first served basis.

According to officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI), nearly 40% of parking space had to be taken till the construction of the multi-level car parking got over. “So, if someone wants to park their vehicle, they should come well ahead of time, failing which they will not get a slot. But we plan to do away with the rule that all vehicles entering the airport and heading to the departure halls must leave within 12 minutes, failing which they have to pay parking fee. Vehicle can stop for a few minutes to drop off a passenger and then exit,” an official said.

A set of personnel will be standing outside the departure halls to ensure vehicles do not stay for too long in front of the terminal; if they do find a vehicle staying outside departure halls for too long, they will levy a heavy fine.

But as far as the arrival halls of both international and domestic terminals are concerned, only private vehicles and Ola can come in for free and pick up passengers.

If those coming to departure or arrival halls know they may stay for long, then they have to park the vehicles in the designated parking lots. Also, AAI is working to reduce the parking fee as well.
