School students might have got another day’s holiday on Monday, but parents are worried that once classes resume, their children might be forced to write examinations without a break.

Schools were re-scheduled to commence classes on November, a day after Deepavali, but have been closed since then due to the torrential rain.

Having lost nearly 10 academic days, not only will teachers rush through lessons, but students will be forced to appear for the examinations without a break.

A school education activist, preferring not be named, said: “If this turns out to be true, the School Education Department should step in. We learn that a few schools are planning to conduct more than one test a day once they re-open.

Students and parents will be under lot of pressure. Working parents will be forced to take a long-leave to help their students prepare for the tests,” he said.

N. Vijayan of Zion Group of Schools, said: “The safety and health of students is very important. Many of our students’ homes have been inundated.

Till normalcy returns, the unit and cycle tests’ can be postponed. The 12-day lessons in each subjects and cycle-unit tests can be conducted on Saturdays,” he suggested.

A private school teacher said though students have had a long holiday, they simply cannot rush through the portions. “We have to teach them thoroughly. Moreover, students would have prepared for tests during the holidays,” he said.

P. B. Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary, State Platform for Common School System, said students had a leave of only nine ‘school working’ days prior to Deepavali and that lessons can be covered on Saturdays too and completed, but the half-yearly examinations holidays should not be cancelled, he made it clear.
