The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission’s online counselling ended on Monday with 97,980 seats remaining vacant.

At the end of the five rounds of online counselling, 74,601 seats had been filled in the State’s various engineering colleges.

Government-run colleges and a dozen well-established autonomous, affiliated institutions have filled most of its seats. More than half the 473 self-financing colleges, however, have managed to fill only 30% of their seats.

In as many as 103 colleges, only 50% of the sanctioned intake have been filled.

The first choice has been computer science and the second, mechanical engineering.

Information Technology has been relegated to the 7th position in terms of number of seats filled.

T. Rammohan, a civil engineering professor in Karpagam College of Engineering, an autonomous institution in Coimbatore, which has filled 57.3% of its seats, said: “It is only a cycle. Students believe that CSE will get them a job. They want to see large salary packets immediately on their graduation. But the students should know that they must work hard at least for a year or two before looking for big money.”
