Opposition parties have welcomed the Karnataka government’s decision to file an appeal in Supreme Court against the acquittal of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and others from the disproportionate wealth case.
Expressing happiness over the decision, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said, “I will welcome anyone who is ready to uphold the rule of law and justice.”
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E.V.K.S. Elangovan said the swift response, coming within 20 days after the High Court verdict, was commendable.
“The Karnataka High Court Special Bench had completely set aside the trial court’s verdict. With two such contrasting judgments, only the Supreme Court can give final justice in the case,” he said, adding that he hoped the apex court would not give in to any pressure while delivering its verdict.
Terming it “a delayed yet welcome decision”, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said he had been insisting from the beginning that the verdict acquitting Ms. Jayalalithaa deserved revision.
“It would have been a big injustice to permit someone to become a Chief Minister on the benefit of a wrong judgment and let go corruptions and scandals,” Dr. Ramadoss said in a statement.
