The 73rd Independence Day was celebrated with fervour at various places in Chennai and elsewhere on Thursday. On the occasion, Chennai Corporation felicitated 64 engineers and civic workers who contributed to civic services and infrastructure development.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner G. Prakash hoisted the national flag on the premises of the Ripon Buildings and distributed awards to engineers and civic officials. Corporation Executive Engineer P.V. Srinivasan, who contributed to the development of web-based applications for civic improvement and utility mapping based on GIS for improving property tax collections received the award from the Commissioner.

At an event organised by the Income Tax Department, Principal Chief Commissioner Rajiv Jain addressed the gathering and urged participants to remember the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters.

Employees of Chennai Metrowater were felicitated by Managing Director T.N. Hariharan on the premises of the headquarters of Chennai Metrowater in Chintadripet. Tamil Nadu State Election Commissioner R. Palaniswamy hoisted the national flag at the State Election Commission Office in Koyambedu. Independence Day was celebrated at the Chennai Port Trust. Chairman P. Raveendran hoisted the national flag, inspected the guard of honour and addressed the gathering. Cash awards were presented to personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force, Port Fire Service and NCC cadets. CMRL Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Bansal hoisted the national flag and presented awards to the best performing employees.

Drivers felicitated

ONGC Executive Director V. Syam Mohan hoisted the national flag at the CMDA buildings in Egmore. State Express Transport Corporation Chief Financial Officer B. Sellva Parvathi felicitated drivers who contributed to the prevention of road traffic accidents. MTC Managing Director K. Ganesan said 695 new buses had been introduced in the city.

Independence Day was celebrated at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (CPCL) Manali Refinery Complex. CPCL Managing Director S.N. Pandey unfurled the national flag and took the salute from the Central Industrial Security Force. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pandey lauded the employees for achieving the highest ever distillate yield, lowest ever energy intensity index and the highest ever production of diesel and hexane during 2018-19.

Indian Audit and Accounts Department Accountant General D. Jaishankar hoisted the national flag and distributed cash awards to employees. Vishwanath Singh Jadon, Accountant General, in his address, said the staff were development fighters who, as accountants, served stakeholders like pensioners, and as auditors, kept a watch on the spending of the government.
