It is more than a month since Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) carried out repairs on the underground sewage pipes near the intersection of Wheatcrofts Road and Sivaganga Main Road in Nungambakkam.

But the Greater Chennai Corporation is yet to relay the stretch with bitumen coating. At present, it has just levelled the dug-up portion of the stretch near the junction with blue metal to prevent rainwater stagnation.

Motorists and pedestrians find it difficult to use the stretch.

“We tend to skid while driving over the blue metal. It is even more dangerous during night as the intersection is not well-lit. There have been instances of motorists getting hurt,” says K. Rakesh Kumar, a resident from Teynampet and a motorcyclist . The intersection witnesses heavy traffic as it connects to Sterling Road. At present, Wheatcrofts Road and Sivaganga Main Road are one-way routes whereas the Sterling Road is a two-way from Loyola College to the Nungambakkam junction, a distance of around one kilometre.

Motorists prefer this intersection to the congested and narrow Kodambakkam High Road.

In this regard, Corporation officials say that CMWSSB has paid the road-cutting fee and the stretch will be relaid at the earliest.
