Number of road accidents, fatalities down in State

Chennai tops list with 1,260 casualties

The number of fatalities in road accidents across Tamil Nadu has come down to 12,216 during 2018, the lowest in the past 10 years. The number of road accidents too is on the decline: 63,920 last year, compared to 71,431 and 65,562 in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

In 2018, a total of 1,260 casualties (excluding three reported with the railway police) were reported in Chennai district, the highest in the State, followed by 856 in Kancheepuram, 538 in Villupuram, 534 in Coimbatore and 503 in Vellore. As many as 7,580 road accidents were reported in Chennai district followed by 3,493 in Cuddalore, 3,262 in Villupuram and 3,176 in Kancheepuram during 2018.

Between January and March this year, there were 15,044 accidents with 2,774 casualties.

Of these, 1,988 accidents were reported in Chennai district while Kancheepuram and Villupuram districts accounted for 879 and 735 respectively. Chennai district accounted for 340 casualties this year till March 31, the highest in the State.

Lowest number

The Nilgiris accounted for the lowest number of accidents in 2018 (228) as well as during the three months until March this year (29).

Over 19.94 lakh vehicles added to the total number of vehicles in the State during 2018 and 2019. As on January 1 this year, about 2.71 crore vehicles were plying in the State.
