The number of localities complaining about water stagnation doubled after another day of downpour.
On Sunday, Chennai Corporation staff were trying to clear water in over 300 localities all across the city, but it hardly helped.
Following an increase in water levels, the civic body rescued 1,900 people on Sunday, housing them in shelters in safer locations. Food packets for residents were supplied through 81 Amma Canteens, seven community kitchens and five community halls, officials said.
Chennai Corporation was able to rectify defects in only 186 of the 490 localities with water stagnation on Sunday. Over 12,000 people attended medical camps organised on Sunday at 98 localities. Over 23500 workers baled out water in Vysarpadi, Madipakkam, Velachery, Adyar, Korattur, Villivakkam, Arumbakkam, Sholinganallur, Perungudi, Manali, Kodungaiyur, Porur, Chintadripet, Valasaravakkam, Pazhavanthangal and Alandur.
Work on reducing water stagnation commenced on Friday in 398 localities with water stagnation. The number is on the rise because of incessant rain on Sunday. Mayor Saidai Duraisamy and Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur visited a few places to assess civic problems relating to severe inundation this monsoon.
Boats to rescue affected residents were readied in Basin Bridge, Adyar and Ambattur. Chennai Corporation used 470 pumpsets, 75 super sucker machines and 57 excavators to mitigate damages. National Disaster Response Force personnel have reached Adyar and Basin Bridge to cope with any disaster.
The State government has kept all its resources and manpower at its disposal in the event of more problems arising on Monday as the fears of surplus water overflowing lakes and entering residential localities in the suburbs looms on Monday. Sources also said that a decision to open the shutters of Chembarambakkam Lake would be taken on Monday morning. On Sunday evening, the shutters were not open.
