Now get a passport within five days

If you need a passport urgently and have three valid documents, including Aadhar card, you can apply and get the passport within three to five days, since the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has relaxed the norms for the police verification process.

Going by the latest norms, you can apply and get the passport within three to five days, if you have Aadhar card with two other documents and an affidavit declaring that you don’t have any criminal track-record and the police verification process would follow later, according to Regional Passport Officer K. Balamurugan.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Balamurugan also said that passport applicants can now choose their appointment time on five working days and don’t have to come to the three Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) in the city on a fixed date and time like earlier.

“All these are part of Government Process Re-engineering of e-governance, which is aimed at reducing the process in issuing passports to applicants. Since the Aadhar database with 96 crore citizens have been integrated with passport database, it has become possible to get passport within three to five days,” he said.

Efforts to integrate data from Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) of the State with passport database was in the pipeline, he said, adding Permanent Account Number (PAN) database would also to be integrated with that of passport. An app – mPassport Police app - for benefitting police personnel involved in the verification has also been developed and would be introduced shortly, he said. As for those who had applied for replacing passports, which were damaged during the recent floods, he said a total of 3,970 passports have been issued replacing damaged ones.
