Highlighting that the Centre is in the process of finalising the National Education Policy, Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu said when it is implemented, it will provide India-centric education that will transform the nation.
Speaking at the event commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of philanthropist Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty on Saturday, he said the policy would enhance the role for charitable organisations in school education.
Referring to some people creating controversy over learning other languages, he said there shouldn’t be imposition of any language nor opposition to learning a new one.
Lauding Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty’s (DRBCCC) Charities, which marks its centenary, for running a number of educational institutions, he said Mr. Chetty’s life and philanthropy must be an inspiration to businessmen today to contribute to society.
Governor Banwarilal Purohit praised DRBCCC Charities for following the path set by its founder. Mr. Chetty lived in harmony with the Indian philosophy that service to humanity was service to god. He said the late philanthropist’s commitment to charity, particularly in education, was so deep-rooted that he bequeathed all his wealth for charity through a will.
A commemorative postal stamp was released by Mr. Naidu in the presence of Chief Postmaster General of Tamil Nadu Circle M. Sampath.
M. Venkatesa Perumal, president, and M.V. Cunniah Chetty, managing trustee, DRBCCC Charities, spoke. A documentary on the life of Mr. Chetty was screened.
