In a daring robbery, a two-member gang allegedly attacked an employee of the Narcotics Control Bureau and snatched her nine-sovereign chain in Tirumangalam here on Wednesday night.

According to police sources, Devarani (40), sepoy attached to the NCB's south zonal office, was returning home from work when the incident took place. “She was walking from the Tirumangalam bus stop when the youths who came on a motorcycle hit her on the head with a sharp weapon. Even as she tried to react, they hacked her on the back. The accused persons robbed Devarani of her gold chain and sped away,” NCB Zonal Director S. Davidson Devasirvatham said.

The victim was admitted to a private hospital with a skull fracture and a deep cut injury on her back. The suspects took advantage of the less inhabited road and robbed the woman. “She alerted her cousin who rushed to her rescue. The attack was unprovoked… her condition is said to be stable,” Mr. Davidson said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Anna Nagar) Prem Anand Sinha visited the scene of crime and formed special teams to investigate the case.

In a similar case around the same time in Tirumangalam, a youth was attacked and robbed of his gold chain. Police said Ganesan (22), supervisor in a private firm, was returning home from work when he was attacked by two unidentified persons. The accused snatched a two-sovereign gold chain from the victim.

At T. Nagar, Varalakshmi (60) of Narasimhapuram was robbed of her gold chain on Wednesday night.

Police sources said the woman was walking near her house when two persons wearing helmets came on a motorcycle and snatched her four-sovereign chain and escaped.

The Soundarapandianar Angadi police have registered a case. Police are investigating whether the same gang was involved in the robberies, the sources added.
