The son of a Chennai-bound elderly couple recalled the harrowing experience his parents went through aboard the Tamil Nadu Express that was robbed on Thursday night.

“My parents were in the 2-tier AC compartment. A group, wearing monkey caps, turned on the lights and threatened my mother at knifepoint,” said Amit Kumar, a resident of Kellys whose parents Ramkumar Garg (58) and Saroj (54) were on the train.

“When my father tried to fight them, he was hit on the head with an iron rod. He is badly injured,” said Mr. Kumar.

The couple was robbed of jewellery worth Rs. 13 lakh. “My dad has 18 stitches on his head. They alighted at Agra, from where I brought them to Chennai by flight.”
