MTC fleet expands by 56

Buses to operate on high-revenue routes as deluxe service

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami launched 56 new buses for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation on Monday. The buses were among 555 operationalised across six State transport corporations (STCs).

The Chief Minister flagged off seven vehicles at a function at the Secretariat. The new buses with several customer-friendly amenities were purchased at a cost of ₹140 crore.

Routes assigned

A senior official of the MTC said the 56 new buses that have been inducted will be operated on high-revenue routes as deluxe services. The new buses would be operated on routes like CMBT to Kelambakkam (route no. 570), Tambaram to Sriperumbudur (583), Tambaram to T. Nagar (V51), Broadway to Vandalur (21G), Tiruvottiyur to Poonamallee (101), Poonamallee to Red Hills (62), Tambaram East to Thiruvanmiyur (95), and Thiruvanmiyur to Toll Gate (6D).

One bus was launched in October and has been operating on the Kelambakkam to Broadway route and has proved to be a big hit with commuters.

Among the buses allotted to the six STCs, Kovai STC cornered 140, Salem 112, Kumbakonam 102, Villupuram 82 and Madurai 63.
