The Choolaimedu Exnora Innovator’s Club (CEIC) has thanked the Southern Railway for taking steps to construct a pedestrian subway at the Nungambakkam Railway Station.
In a release, it said that in the last several years, it (CEIC) had appealed to both Southern Railway and Members of Parliament (former and current) to consider the option of constructing a pedestrian subway at the station due to steep steps at the foot overbridge (FOB).
Commuters, especially senior citizens, found it difficult to climb the staircases. During rush hours, the FOB used to be jam-packed.
In 2011, the Club, organised a signature campaign in this regard and more than 2,000 residents of Choolaimedu participated.
“The project has been sanctioned under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) Scheme. After conducting a feasibility study, the Railway called for tenders in July this year.
The tenders were opened on August 26. The work on constructing the subway will begin soon, and is expected to be completed in 11 months. The subway will be a boon to commuters and pedestrians,” the release added.
