Mobile signal eludes commuters in underground Metro stretch

CMRL officials say services will be available in two months

Chennai Metro Rail has not brought in mobile connectivity to many users on the first underground stretch even after about two years since it was thrown open for use.

Since August last year, only Jio users have been getting connectivity on the underground stretches. Customers of other telecom operators do not get the signal.

Unkept promise

Passengers say that when they shell out so much on fares, it was only natural to expect the best services.

Shiva Neelakantan, a resident of Anna Nagar, said, “If they hadn’t promised, we wouldn’t have demanded. They promised there will be mobile connectivity within months of opening the Koyambedu-Nehru Park stretch. Last month, I was travelling from Anna Nagar to Central and missed important calls.”

Despite the phase I project nearing completion, there is still no sign of mobile network of most operators in the underground stretches.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials say they plan to provide mobile services in the underground stretches within two months.

“We have had several round of discussions with operators like Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL. There were a few issues and we will be fixing them soon,” an official said.
