The city may experience mild showers in some areas till Wednesday, owing to convective activity, according to officials of the Meteorological Department.

On Monday, both weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam received traces of rainfall till evening. The automatic weather station in Madhavaram received 1cm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Some areas in Chennai may get rain due to convective activity aided by strong westerly winds, officials said.

While Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, Meenambakkam registered a day temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius, which is close to normal.

N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said an offshore monsoon trough extending up to north Kerala coast would influence heavy rainfall in districts along the Western Ghats, particularly the Nilgiris and Coimbatore district.

Moreover, these districts would also receive rainfall due to the orographic effect, he said.

During the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Avalanche in Nilgiris district recorded the highest volume of rainfall, at 21cm.

There are chances of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the State till Friday.
