All roads like Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai (Marina) leading to the Chennai from the south were choked with traffic on Sunday as the ruling AIADMK celebrated the valedictory of the MGR centenary celebrations.
The party’s second line leaders mobilised crowds from districts and ferried them in buses, mostly private vehicles. Some of buses are owned by colleges and the State Express Transport Corporation.
Hundreds of vehicles from the southern and western districts brought in thousands of people, mostly men, into the city. Vehicles were found parked in several areas around the meeting venue. Residents in T. Nagar, Adyar, Mylapore and southern suburbs had a tough time commuting.
Court’s poser
In a parallel development, the issue of illegal hoardings went to the Madras High Court, on Sunday morning. The State government admitted that 465 banners were installed on Anna Salai. The court has now asked the government to explain the penal action taken against those who had put up the unauthorised flex boards.
Later in the evening, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami promised a slew of developmental projects for the city during his concluding speech at the valedictory function.
