Metro Rail plans cab-on-call service

The affordable cab-on-call service will be introduced at select Metro Rail stations in the city.

In a few days from now, Chennai Metro Rail will roll out an affordable cab service exclusively for its commuters to reach the nearest station.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd., a commuter would have to call the customer care number 18604251515 and book a cab.

To begin with, the service will be offered within a 3- km radius of the five Chennai Metro Rail stations of Anna Nagar East, AG-DMS, Vadapalani, Alandur and Koyambedu.

“For instance, if a passenger is waiting at Saligramam and wants to take a train from the nearest station — Vadapalani in this case — he can call the customer care number and give his location. The cab will be sent to the spot to pick him up,” an official said.

Chennai Metro Rail will charge commuters a fixed rate of ₹15 for pick-up and drop service anywhere within the 3-km radius of the station. The service will later be extended to all stations, the officials said.

Already, the metro is offering regular cab services at these five stations.

Commuters want App

Welcoming it as a good initiative, commuters want the CMRL to extend the cab facility through its mobile app instead of having to call the customer care number.

Ananditha Sanjay, a resident of Anna Nagar, said, “They can have this feature included in the Chennai Metro Rail’s mobile app. The driver will know the exact location using GPS and we can track the driver too. It will work much better that way. I hope they implement it soon.” But officials are not sure if the cab services will be incorporated in the mobile app immediately.

“We are considering that option too,” said an officer unwilling to set any time frame.

Only recently, Chennai Metro Rail brought in cabs and share autos to help commuters with last mile connectivity.

Share autos are available in Ashok Nagar, Alandur, Ekkatuthangal, Guindy, Koyambedu, St. Thomas Mount and Thirumangalam.
