‘Mend battered section of Thiru Vi Ka bridge’

When motorists hit this section, the drive quality plummets, with disconcerting thuds

A portion of the carriageway on Thiru Vi Ka Bridge on Durgabai Deshmukh Road in Adyar, towards Lattice Bridge Road, resembles a car with heavy dents.

Motorists frequenting this battered section have requested the State Highways Department to have it mended.

When motorists hit this section, the drive quality plummets, with disconcerting thuds. So, the regular motorists swerve to the left or to the right, which takes following motorists by surprise.

Road users also point out the risk faced by motorcyclists on this road: More often than not, the bridge is wide open and makes for fast-moving traffic, and the battered section has some deep-cuts. The combination of a speeding motorcycle and these deep cuts can be deadly, leading to skidding.

“This scarred surface does not spare even the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses route numbers, those thuds,” said A. Vinod, a commuter.

On the sidelines

The pavements are spacious. However, as they are used as an open toilet, many pedestrians avoid them like the plague. Every day, a huge number of commuters pass through the bridge to reach many areas in the vicinity.

When contacted, a State Highways Department official said, “We will conduct an inspection at the stretch and take necessary steps to have the damaged locations relaid.”
