MDRF presents award to researcher from Arizona

Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) - Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre conferred the first MDRF-Distinguished Alumnus Award on Sampathkumar Rangaswamy at a function held on Monday.

Mr. Sampathkumar is an assistant professor at the Neurogenomics division, Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), Phoenix, Arizona.

The award was established to recognise the contribution of alumni in the research field.

MDRF’s president and director V. Mohan presented the citation and medal to Mr. Sampathkumar.

Lauding Mr. Sampathkumar’s contribution, Dr. Mohan said he was continuing his studies in various areas, including diabetic retinopathy, neurogenomics and neurovascular disorders.

Mr. Sampathkumar joined the MDRF as junior research fellow in 2001. He is now also a team member at Centre for Rare Childhood Disorders working on breakthrough treatment modalities for children.

He also appreciated Mr. Sampathkumar for his perseverance and how he managed type 1 diabetes that he developed at the age of 13.

Accepting the award, Mr. Sampathkumar said type 1 diabetes motivated him to learn about diabetes and led him to research field. He also spoke on his research work, including in diabetic retinopathy.
