Masked man enters ladies compartment of MRTS train


A masked man barged into the ladies compartment of a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) train at Perungudi Railway Station on Wednesday morning, causing panic among women commuters.

Southern Railway staff at Velachery Railway Station said the intruder was intercepted by ticket-checking staff after a woman commuter in the compartment of the train operated between Chennai Beach and Velachery informed the station manager. Security personnel later picked up the man on suspicion when he was sitting at a tea stall near the railway station.

The woman commuter, staff told The Hindu , had also taken a photo in her mobile phone of the masked man holding a pen knife inside the ladies compartment. The railway official said: “By the time the person was caught, he had changed his attire but his bag contained the T-shirt he was wearing while travelling in the train. The bag also contained two knives and scissors.”

Personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) policemen secured the suspect - Abdul Sheik (20) of Kovilambakkam. He was handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for further action. GRP personnel are recording his statement under provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure. He said the youth had informed them that his father was a cobbler and that he was only carrying his knives and scissors. He hailed from West Bengal, he told policemen. Policemen however said no case was registered as there was no assault.
