The Zero Waste Chennai (ZWC) initiative started by the Greater Chennai Corporation essentially seeks to reduce waste by promoting maximum recovery of material discards and phasing out those categories of garbage that cannot be be recycled.
The effectiveness of the initiative largely depends on residents knowing where the relevant waste-management facilities are located.
Citizen Consumer Civic Action Group (CAG), which works with GCC as part of this initiative, has come up with maps that mark waste-management facilities within Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) limits.
According to a press release from CAG, maps about ward-level waste-management facilities have been created in collaboration with GCC, for Zones VIII, IX, X and XIII.
In addition, for Zone VIII, it is mapping bulk waste generators and commercial establishments for GCC to monitor their waste disposal, says the release.
The collection routes have been digitised with the objective of helping the public monitor the process, and for GCC to optimise routes and frequencies, adds the release.
The maps identifies micro-composting centres (MCCs), which are meant for collecting and composting biodegradable discards; and material recovery facilities (MRFs), which are centres where non-compostable solid waste can be temporarily stored to facilitate collection, segregation, sorting and recovery of various components of waste.
