Man kills son

An 82-year-old man killed his 44-year-old mentally-challenged son by administering sleeping pills and remained near his body for the last few days inside his house in Alwarpet. The police broke into the house after neighbours complained of foul smell emanating from the house. He committed the crime as he was worried about his son’s plight after his death.

The police said Viswanathan, a retired stenographer, and his son Venkatraman lived in an apartment complex in Alwarpet. Viswanathan’s wife died many years ago. Despite his age-related illness, he had been taking care of his son after her death.

It is suspected that after Deepavali, Viswanathan gave his son food laced with sleeping pills. He also tried to end his life. Though his son died, he survived. As foul smell started emanating from the house, the neighbours informed the Teynampet police. The police broke into the house and found Venkatesan's decomposed body and Viswanathan lying unconscious near him.

Viswanathan has been admitted to a hospital and his son’s body has been sent for post mortem.
