The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a man, on Tuesday, on charges of raping a German woman in a Chennai-bound train near Kozhikode on Friday.
The police said the woman boarded West Coast Express from Mangalore and was travelling on a reservation against cancellation (RAC) ticket in S-10 coach.
She was sharing berth number 55 with Chandan Kumar, a 32-year old man, who was also travelling on an RAC ticket. The man allegedly raped her on the night of January 10 when the train was near Kozhikode.
She lodged a complaint with the GRP on January 13, two days after she reached Chennai Central railway station. The man was arrested on January 14 and remanded the next day.
The woman, who is a social worker in Udipi, was travelling to Chennai to meet a friend in Mamallapuram. “The train arrived at Chennai Central on the night of January 11. But she lodged a complaint only on January 13. Apparently, she consulted with the German consulate and then lodged a complaint,” said a GRP officer.
The police tracked the man using his PNR number. “We got hold of his cellphone number from the application form he had used to book the ticket and arrested him in Kovur near Mangadu. He confessed to having committed the crime,” said a senior GRP officer.
