A 36-year-old man was found dead on Marina Beach after an inquiry at a police station.

According to sources, a patrolling team nabbed him after receiving information that the man had attempted to steal a motorcycle. He was then brought to the police station for an inquiry.

The deceased, identified as Rajendra Kumar Pradhan and hailing from Odisha, was staying in Triplicane with his friends and working at an eatery.

Three Sub-inspectors and a police constable nabbed him and took him to the police station.

Pradhan was allegedly in an inebriated condition. On December 3, his body was found on the sands off Kamarajar Road. Morning walkers informed the control room.

The matter came to light only on Saturday and senior police officers held an inquiry with police personnel who had subjected him to an inquiry.

Asked to respond whether it was death due to custodial torture, a senior police officer said, “It’s not true. He was brought on a complaint of attempt to steal a two-wheeler. Since he was fully drunk, he was sent out. We have video footage. He seemed to have died hours later.” The preliminary report of post-mortem says he died of excessive consumption triggering a heart collapse.

“However, we are awaiting the official report,” said the senior police officer.
