A railway employee, who returned to pluck mangoes from a tree he had planted many years ago, died after he fell from it in Nungambakkam on Sunday evening.

R.Ramudu (59) of neighbouring Tiruvallur district, was employed as a carpenter in Southern Railway. He was a long-time resident of Narmada complex of the Railway Quarters on Sterling Road in Nungambakkam but had moved out recently, city police said.

He had planted the sapling of a mango tree many years ago and used to collect mango fruits from the tree every year during summer. He would come to pluck the mango fruits even after shifting his home, police said. On Sunday, around 5.30 p.m., Ramudu came to the quarters and climbed the tree, but he lost his balance and fell. He sustained critical injuries on his head. Residents in the quarters rushed him to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries later in the evening. On Monday, his body was handed over to his relatives.
