J. Karthik, 28, an autorickshaw driver was arrested by the Valasaravakkam police on Sunday for allegedly committing burglaries. About 36 sovereigns of stolen jewellery were recovered from him, the police said.

The sources added that Karthik, a resident of Virugambakkam, reportedly committed burglaries in broad daylight when he was riding his auto. He allegedly looked for locked houses and used the back door to enter and steal the valuables, they said.

The police claimed that he was a serious offender since he was arrested in 2010 for similar offences. He was nabbed following burglaries in two houses in Valasaravakkam area last week.

According to the police, he was identified by the registration number of his autorickshaw, which was recorded on a CCTV camera in the locality. He was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
