HR&CE Department launches GPS-linked portal; 20,000 locations captured so far

Locating temples, particularly those that are over hundred years old, and details of their properties, will be soon be possible across the State digitally, as the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has created a GPS-coordinated GIS portal.

A total of 20,000 temple locations across the State have been captured so far using the mobile app and it was inaugurated by Minister Sevvoor S. Ramachandran. He also inaugurated a petition processing portal.

“The GIS portal will show all the lands belonging to temples online. The nature of properties, their survey numbers, boundaries, extent, usage and current statues will be displayed,” said T.K. Ramachandran, Principal Secretary and Commissioner of the HR&CE Department. All the 44,000 temples under the control of the department will soon be captured in the portal.

“The exercise has been completed for the temples in Chennai and will be extended to other districts in a phased manner,” Mr. Ramachandran said. Chennai district has 3,600 land parcels.

Explaining the features of the petition processing portal, he said it was implemented with the support of the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
