The city, awaiting a delayed northeast monsoon to rescue it from impending water shortage, woke up to an overcast sky and light rain in some parts on Tuesday.

Rains may return over coastal areas as the monsoon is around the corner. Places including Chennai saw light showers in the early hours of Tuesday. According to the Meteorological Department, conditions are turning favourable for the monsoon’s arrival in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and the adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka around November 1.

Intensifying factors

Besides a cyclonic circulation over south-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka, another weather system that is expected to intensify into a low pressure area by Wednesday prevails over west-central Bay of Bengal. A trough linking these two systems would usher in monsoon rains.

The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea as strong northeasterly winds, going up to 50 km per hour, may prevail over the north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

Chennai may continue to enjoy overcast skies and experience light rain for one more day, which may become widespread by Thursday.
