“Prompt action has brought down prices”



Prices of sugar and edible oils have come down due to the effective steps taken by the State government, and prices of other essential commodities will also register a fall in the coming week, said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here on Monday.

Sugar, which was selling at Rs.3,200 per 100 kg a week ago was now quoted at Rs.3,120.

Similarly, the price of palm oil was Rs.40 a kg, against Rs.42 last week, sunflower oil, Rs.49 compared to Rs.52, groundnut oil, Rs.68, against Rs.70, Agmark gingili oil, Rs.110 compared to Rs.112 and first grade coconut oil Rs.70 against Rs.75 per kg quoted last week. Referring to the by-election to Pennagaram Assembly constituency, the Chief Minister quoted the Chief Electoral Officer's statement that it went off peacefully owing to the district administration and police, and the surveillance camera system had prevented bogus voting.

Reacting to Tamilnadu Vivasaigal Sangam president's demand that M.K. Alagiri, Union Minister of Chemical and Fertilizer, should have resigned if he was not in favour of the fertilizer policy of the Centre, the Chief Minister said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had already informed the Centre that it was against an increase in fertilizer prices.

Denying that poet Kambar was not given his due credit in the Classical Tamil meet being held at Coimbatore, the Chief Minister said one research forum at the meet was to be named after him.
