The proposed CPI (M) protest in front of the new Secretariat demanding pattas for 10 lakh families living in and around Chennai will not affect the inaugural function of the complex, the party’s State secretary G. Ramakrishnan said here on Wednesday.

“The protest will be held on April 19, a month after the inaugural function.”

Mr. Ramakrishnan explained that 780 families living on nattham lands at Mangalapuram in Ambattur Municipality were yet to get house pattas.

“More than 95 per cent of them are Dalits and, even after 50 years, could not get pattas.”

Similarly 900 families living on land allotted by the Slum Clearance Board were also fighting for pattas for the last 10 years.

“Though the Chairman of the Slum Clearance Board has written to the Revenue Department, seeking pattas, many times, nothing has happened. Is the Chief Minister aware of it?” Mr. Ramakrishnan asked.
